when-strange-becomes-normal asked: Re: your post - At least for me, I view SNM as a staggering embodiment of Freud's Unheimliche. Based on what you've written, you seem to feel similarly. (I'm such a nerd.) Inside the McKittrick I feel, for a few hours at least, that the world is full of boundless possibilities, mystery, and erotic potential. It's exciting that you've had its world cross into your own....

The Year of No Sleep →
Last night I went back to Manderley, for drinks and music and friends, as I now do pretty often. I didn’t see Sleep No More last night, but as I stood there in the crowded bar, it occurred to me that with sixteen shows under my belt and a seventeenth coming on Saturday, I’ve already spent at least 48 hours inside the McKittrick Hotel, just accounting for the performances. Add on the...

Games of 2011: Sleep No More →
I still don’t think that Sleep No More is a game. Yes, there’s role-playing, but that’s part of its theatrical valence and there is no way to alter outcomes in Sleep No More (save for dick moves such as hiding key props, for which you should be ejected). That said, this is a great post, particularly the section about psychological barriers. And I have long yearned for a SNM...

Patrick Healy Looks Back at Theater in 2011 →
HOTTEST TICKET And by hot, we mean sexy as well as popular. For “Sleep No More,” a warehouse was tricked outfor a nearly wordless re-enactment of scenes from “Macbeth,” with the audience in masks following sometimes-nude actors from room to room. The voyeuristic show was extended multiple times and is going strong into 2012.

Inside 'Sleep No More,' The Insane Theater Phenom →
Business Insider: Step aside, “Book of Mormon.” The UK’s Punchdrunk brought “Sleep No More” to the McKittrick Hotel in Chelsea in March — since then, it’s become one of the most popular shows in New York. Article says ‎”Audiences must abandon their cell phones, and more uniquely, their voices. There’s no talking at all during the...

Eveningness: Sleep No More? Certainly not after... →
Wonderful tips for new visitors, but addendum to #8: don’t take pictures in the hotel at all (it’s okay at the bar). They’re very clear: no phones and no photography. You will be kicked out for it and that’s a terrible way to end the evening. eveningnessnyc: Last Thursday night I went to experience only what I had read about in magazines (and seen on Gossip Girl): the...

My Sleep No More Top 10
Since every entertainment media outlet is publishing Top 10 lists for the year, this seems like the best opportunity to recall the Top 10 things I experienced at Sleep No More over the course of the year. 10. My first-ever 1:1 (with Banquo) 9. Getting to the Sixth Floor 8. Having five 1:1s in one night 7. The new twist in Malcolm’s 1:1 6. A cast member coming up to me in the bar after the...

the ersatz vegetarian: run, don't walk →
theersatzvegetarian: Guys, I finally got to Sleep No More last Saturday. Holeee shit, it’s among the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. If you can get to NYC buy a ticket and just go, seriously. Go. It’s doesn’t matter if you’re by yourself—in fact, it’s better that way—just go. It was creepy, a little…

Table for Two?
Reader submission: Thanks for re-posting that juvenile Gawker writeup on the show; it helps me better understand what happened earlier this week. I went back to SNM this past Tuesday for my second visit, and the audience was atrocious. Not only were they slow moving, disinterested, unobservant of the actors’ space and/or trajectory, but they were downright invasive. I ran into all the...

Stupid Gawker.
That Gawker guide to Sleep No More’s nudity is really pissing me off. 1. Don’t prescribe a route for people 2. Don’t spoil the show’s content like that 3. Don’t treat these incredibly talented & generous performers like they’re lifeless pornotypes 4. Don’t encourage the audience to push and shove 5. Don’t encourage the audience to SEXUALLY...

How to Find All the Nudity in Sleep No More →
For months now the hottest ticket in New York is to experimental theater “experience”Sleep No More. (Well, the hottest ticket has been Book of Mormon but this is a close second.) Maybe part of the reason is people know the show is full of nudity, an orgy, and other sexy goings on. Well, I figured out how you can get the most (ahem) bang for your buck and see all the nudity.

Birthday!
Hey, 20 followers! Thank you so much! We’re like 1/10th the size of the crowd that follows Hecate after the rave scene now.  Let me just note that Sleep No More is the best place to have your birthday. They took very good care of my party last night. There are quite a few new cast members - I saw new performers last night as: Lady Macbeth, Macduff, Lady Macduff, Malcolm, Mr. Bargarran, J....
